How much do senior pictures cost?
As you search for a senior photographer, one of the most burning questions to parents is, "How much is this going to cost me?"Â The answer is varied and depends on what type of business model the photographer is using.
Let's take a look into the main areas a photographer is charging for:Â
-
Session/Sitting Fees
-
Prints and Digital Negatives
-
Editing
If the photographer is a "Shoot and Burn" photographer, they are likely to have you:
- book and pay online,
- schedule an appointment for the shoot by email,
- meet you to photograph your senior pictures,
- then give you a digital download of the files once they are captured.Â
- It is then typically your responsibility to order your own prints, canvas, and upload your own images to Shutterfly or other online print service if you want physical prints of your files.Â
- This type of photoshoot can range from $50 to $350.
If the photographer is a "Full Service" photographer, they are likely going to have you:
- call to book your appointment, speak with a parent, go over all the pricing, questions, etc.Â
- They may schedule your clothing consult, schedule you or recommend someone for hair and makeup, and discuss locations for the photo shoot.Â
- This type of photo shoot requires a "sitting fee" or "session fee" and can range from $200 to $500 per photo shoot depending on where you are located and how experienced and in-demand the photographer is.
- Â Then, the photographer will have you meet them in person to view and order your images for enlargements, albums, canvas, announcements etc.Â
- These prices can range from $65 all the way up to $5,000 depending on how many prints and albums you order, how big you order them and how many homes you are decorating.
- This type of photographer will typically accept major credit cards and have a payment plan available for installments.Â
- This type of photographer typically has a guarantee you will be happy with the service and/products or refund your money.
You may find a combination of shoot and burn photography that also offers prints later at a discounted rate. That business model will most likely:
- have you book the session and pay on-line
- offer digital downloads of your images with print options available
- suggest a lab you can print at
- have you print your own images
At Suzanne Deaton Photography, you can expect to pay a session fee of $200 to $250 depending on if we are shooting in Hazard, Kentucky or out of town.
We only photograph 100 High School Seniors a year in order to serve every single one of them with a great client experience. Our studio is a boutique studio located in Hazard, Kentucky and serves all of Eastern Kentucky.Â
- We specialize in creating a fashion inspired, model like experience for the day, complete with professional hair and makeup, studio and window light locations and outdoor locations as well. We prepare our clients with a welcome email, clothing consult, shopping guide, hair and makeup recommendations, etc. To find out even MORE, click here!
After your photo shoot, Suzanne will have you come back the studio to see your images live and design products around the ones you cannot live without.
- It will take 2-3 weeks to get your products delivered and they are all guaranteed. This attention to detail is exactly why it costs more at my studio than maybe others with less experience and less client driven experiences. We work together with custom vendors to create works of art that will hang in your home for generations.
Be aware some photographers charge additional fees for extra retouching of the files, braces removal, tan line or glass glare removal, album design, graduation announcement designs, yearbook designs, etc.Â
- If you cannot afford a full service studio, be very selective about the shoot and burn photographer you chose. Make sure you like the way they edit, their choice of locations, their use of light on the subject, their turn around time on getting you edits, their availability to answer questions, handle inquiries etc. You can find some very good shoot and burners that use this business model. Â

Elizabeth Hamilton - My daughter, Halle Hamilton, will be a senior next year and she is wanting you to do her senior pictures. I saw you only take 100 seniors so I wanted to make sure she got on your list. Is it too soon to put her on the list? If so, whens’s a good time to contact you to get her on the list.
